NSF sponsored Professional Development Program in Geospatial Technology for Educators

Ten (10) educators from schools and colleges were recruited to a five (5) day professional development workshop. The goal was to demonstrate the benefits of infusing geospatial technology in their respective classrooms, design a model that works given all the professional, resource related and social challenges that typically characterize technology infusion into existing syllabi. Hands-on training sessions were interspersed with guest lectures and workshops by experts from the geospatial industry, brain storming sessions of what may or may not work given the constraints of time. A plan to engage with the educators post workshop was seen as a critical component of sustaining collaborations beyond the workshops. The BCC Geospatial Center of the CUNY CREST Institute (BGCCCI) will offer additional workshops to assist in the infusion process which must be seen as a long-term approach. Social media and other forms of smart networks will be employed to engage with the educators and assist them in their efforts.
